Frequently Asked Questions

What items should I bring for my residence hall room?

Your room should be more than the place you sleep; it should be a comfortable living space.  It can tend to look a bit institutional, so you may want to bring some items that give it a more personal touch.  When considering which items to bring, remember two basic rules:

 Essential Items to Bring

Regimental Students have further limitations on what they are allowed to bring - and should refer to the list supplied by the Commandants' Division regarding what you are allowed or required to bring.

May I see my room before the move-in date?

No. Residence hall rooms are not available to see before the move-in dates. We plan construction and renovation for the summer. Our halls are also used for conference groups. After groups leave or construction is completed, our housekeeping staff needs time to prepare the halls for your arrival.

However, all rooms are furnished as double-occupancy with each approximately 11.5 feet x 15 feet – though exact size and shape do vary.

Who are Resident Assistants and the Residential Coordinator?

A Resident Assistant (RA) is a fellow student trained to help residents of a hall develop community and reports to the Residential Coordinator (RC).  The RC is a full-time, live-in staff member responsible for the management of Curtis Hall. This includes community development and the training of student residential staff.

Are phones provided?

The Academy does not provide telephone service in student rooms.  However, each room is wired with two telephone jacks (one per resident) should students choose to provide their own land-line telephone and make service arrangements directly with our local provider.  Contact Verizon's College Department at 1-888-225-8520 for further information.  If the company requests a reference phone number, please use the Curtis Hall Quarterdeck Reception line of 1-207-326-2290.  For The Commons, reference your suite number as your "house number" on Pleasant Street.

We strongly recommend that new students wait at least two weeks after arrival to arrange for their own phone.  A number of students will change rooms or roommates during their first month on-campus and regimental students will rotate through a training period on the ship for ¼ to ½ of the semester so permanent Curtis Hall rooms may not be established until the spring semester.  Residents are responsible for all fees related to moving telephones.

Will I have cable television access and a computer connection?

Both are provided in each room. A shielded coaxial cable is needed for the television, and an Ethernet card is needed for the computer.

Each student is expected to bring his or her own laptop computer and printer.  All students will attend an Orientation session specifically designed to register their machine on campus for internet access.  For further information on internet service and computing requirements, please visit the Department of Information Technology.

Where do I send packages and mail?

There is a student mailroom located in the Harold Alfond Student Center.  Once your student has arrived they will receive a mailbox assignment in their orientation packet.  If an address is needed prior to arrival, please use the following:

 Your Student’s Name

New Student

Maine Maritime Academy

Pleasant Street

Castine, ME  04420

Mail and packages will make it to the mail room for them.  If you are shipping packages that your student will need upon arrival, please call Lauren Garrett, Director of Residential Life & Student Services (207-326-2280) and let her know they are coming.  Once your student is here and gets their box number, you can mail packages to that address.

Are laundry facilities provided?

Washers and dryers are provided in each residential area.

Students must have a special laundry card to operate any laundry machine on campus.  New students will be able to purchase their laundry cards from a vending machine at the Curtis Hall Quarterdeck. Cards cost $5.00 and come with a $3.00 introductory credit.  Additional money can then be added to their laundry card using the same vending machine which accepts $5, $10, and $20 bills.

Do I need to move out during breaks?

All residents need to be aware that we close Curtis Hall at 5:00 PM on the Friday beginning our Thanksgiving, Winter, & Spring Breaks and at 4:00 PM on the Friday beginning our Summer Break.  See Housing Calendar for details.

Arrangements can be made with a local transportation service for those students who need rides to the airport or bus station.  The cost is traditionally $75 per round trip, but is divisible by the number of partaking students.  If a student must make arrangements to travel on Saturday, we can provide room in Leavitt Hall at a rate of $15 per night. All students will receive notice prior to our closing dates on how and where to make shuttle or room arrangements.
