Department of Residential Life
Noteworthy Policies
Below are highlights of policies most commonly encountered by residents.
A full listing of residential policies can be found in the Student Handbook.
Electrical Equipment/Appliances:
Unauthorized electrical equipment include such appliances as hot plates (ex. grills), toaster ovens, electric fry pans, soldering irons, electric blankets, stand-alone or window air conditioning units, heating lamps/pads, torch-type lamps, etc. unless authorized by Dean or Director.
Authorized equipment includes: TV, VCR, DVD player, stereo, snack-size microwaves, computer, hair dryer, coffee maker, hot pots with closed coils (for soups and hot water), and a hot air popcorn popper. One small refrigerator (up to 3 cubic feet) per room is also allowed. ONLY extension cords or multi-plugs that feature a built in circuit breaker or surge protector are authorized for use in residential areas.
*Regimental students should consult their class privilege list for restrictions and allowances.*
Furniture/Personal Equipment:
In Curtis Hall, only 1 extra piece of furniture (an "easy chair", couch, futon, etc.) is permitted per room.
In The Commons, a furniture/equipment package is included with each apartment and varies been graduate and undergraduate students. Students are responsible for ensuring that any and all additional student-added equipment or furniture meets Academy standards and safety requirements.
*The building of lofts, or other such modification of rooms/suites, is not allowed for fire safety and maintenance reasons.*
Lock-Out Policy:
It is expected that students will occasionally forget their keys or get locked out; however, consistently doing so may subject the student to a fine or other disciplinary action. If you are locked out, first try to find your roommate. If he/she is unavailable, then contact the following, depending on the appropriate time of day:
Daytime Hours: Residential Coordinator, Director, or any available RA
Evening Hours: Duty RAs (can reach by stopping by the Quarterdeck)
Night-time Hours: Security
Visitor & Guest Policy:
Visitors (other residential MMA students) and guests (non-residential MMA students or other individuals) are permitted as long as their student host is responsible for their safety and well-being and ensure their compliance with all Academy rules and regulations.
Guests MUST be 18 years of age or over unless he/she is a member of the host's immediate family. Exceptions must be requested in writing and approved by the Dean of Student Services no less than one week prior to the visit as emergency contact information will need to be gathered.
Curtis Hall visitors and guests should be checked into the Quarterdeck. Commons visitors and guests should be registered with the Commons Manager.
Overnight guests and off-campus visitors are limited to 72 hours (i.e. up to three days in a row).
Smoking Policy:
Smoking is prohibited anywhere within Curtis Hall or The Commons, including student rooms and inside the Curtis Hall courtyard. There are designated smoking areas in these areas of campus: the "smoking gazebos" around Curtis Hall and The Commons' bench-lined courtyard.
