Background:
Back at the turn of the 20th century, there were sailing ships that serviced the world over. These ships were manned by a crew who were obtained by the Captain. Some signed on as cabin boys, some were duped on board to serve the Captain until the end of the voyage, earning their keep if they lived that long. The end of their voyage was known to these men as "Trick's End".
Later, during the World Wars to follow, men who served their country fro the navy picked up the terminology and applied it to their deployment. Upon returning to their home base, they would call it "Trick's End".
Today, the Merchant Mariner calls his daily watch a "Trick" and at the end of watch he is at his "Trick's End". This has carried over to the men and women who serve in the state and federal Maritime Academy systems.
The "Trick's End" is the MMA yearbook and it traditionally comes to us at the end of our tour of duty as students. For when we leave our station at Maine Maritime Academy, we will have reached our Trick's End.
