Sexual Assault Resources
IF YOU ARE SEXUALLY ASSAULTED . . .
Get to a Safe Place. Put your safety first. If you can't get to a phone yourself, do whatever you can to attract someone's attention to get to a safe place.
Tell Someone. You may feel embarrassed or ashamed, but the most important thing to remember is that no one should be forced to have sex against their will. Telling someone will give you an outlet to express your emotions. Resources that can be accessed are:

Get Medical Attention. Medical care after a sexual assault can detect injuries and test for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and/or Infections. Sexaul Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are trained to collect evidence that could be used should you ever take legal or disciplinary action - and are located at all area hospitals.
To preserve physical evidence, do not shower, bathe, or change clothes. Do not apply medication or cosmetics. If you must change, place your old clothes in a paper bag.
Take Care of Yourself. Sexual assault is a traumatic experience and there is no formula for recovery. Seek counseling to support and guide you through the healing process.
Report It. Only 1 of 10 women ever reports their sexual assault. The number of men who report is even smaller. There are many reasons why this number is so low. Survivors may:
feel ashamed
think that the pain will go away
not be sure if what happened was really rape
believe they are in some way responsible
The decision is completely up to you. You can discuss your situation with any of the above listed resources before you make a decision. There are many options - but you must choose the path that is most comfortable and productive towards your recovery.
