Parent FAQ's
What questions should I be asking my student during the first part of the semester?
During the first part of the academic year, there are times when every student feels overwhelmed, confused, and/or frustrated. We recommend the following conversation starters:
Are you going to all your classes? Skipping class is the #1 reason students receive low and/or failing grades.
Are you doing enough studying? College is a full-time job. Approximately 3 hours of study time should be allotted for each 1 hour of academic credit. As most students carry 15-18 credit hours, study time should equal 45-54 hours per week.
What sort of non-academic/co-curricular opportunities are there for you on campus? Students who get involved outside of the classroom tend to do better in school and stay to finish their degree.
Are you taking time for yourself and your well-being? It is important for students to schedule personal time. Being overwhelmed too soon could lead to larger problems later on.
How are your finances holding up? Are you spending money wisely? Credit card companies like to prey on college students and it is very easy to fall into unnecessary debt.
